I’m down with OCD, yeah, you know me!

spincyclesmallThis week’s spin (or should I say next week’s? Another of my OCD compulsions – try to arrive early, but I digress…)  is about quirks. Do I have any? My answer: “Obviously so, since I am writing this post.”

Hubby’s answer: “Huh? I’m too smart to answer that question. If you know what I mean…”

My mama’s answer: “Does she ever! Why, just the other day…”

The rest of my family just LOLs and nods. So what? So I have a little bit of the OCD. I think everyone does a little!

What comes immediately to mind for me is counting. I think that is a dead giveaway for determining if someone has OCD. At Christmas, I gave all my co-workers (about 7 of them) a cute little cup with snowflakes or something on it. In the cups I put Hershey’s kisses. I had purchased some candy cane ones and some mint truffle ones and some just plain ones. Honestly they have every imaginable kind now! Why the other day someone brought in coconut ones! They taste just like a Mounds bar! A tiny little bite of a Mounds bar, I admit, but a Mounds bar nonetheless! I digress…chocolate does that to me.

So into the cups goes Hershey’s every flavor. Without really realizing the need, I put four of this kind in each cup. Then four of this, then four of that. Then three of this, three of that and so on until the cups are full. I wasn’t going to give a cup to my BFF, Sara because she was getting another present from me because I had her for “Secret Santa”. Which wasn’t so secret this year because she totally came right out and asked me who I have and I wasn’t quick enough to lie. I just said, “Uhhh..I can’t tell you.” Duh. Who else could I have if I couldn’t tell her? That Sara. But, I digress…Sara does that to me.

So then I have the filled cups and I find another cup – one too many. I ponder. I decide to give it to Sara. But all I have left are plain kisses. It took all I had in me to not dump out the other cups and re-count and re-ration the other kisses so that Sara’s cup had the other chocolate-y goodness flavors. I literally had to leave the room and do something else so the insanity could pass!

Then there is the nightly ritual of making sure the front door is locked 8 times before I go to bed.

My mom’s favorite one is when I come home from work and tear through the kitchen cleaning the counters. I swear, she leaves things for me so she can complain that I have OCD. The sponge is always not where it is supposed to be – on the sink. A ripped off part of an oatmeal package over here, a coffee stain over there. And when my MIL visits – holy guacamole, amigos! The kitchen counter is her personal catch-all while she’s here. Knitting needles and yarn over here, 3 glasses over here. “I’m using them all! One is for coffee, one is for tea, one is for water!” Book over there, newspaper on that counter. Antacid meds here. I have to stay out of the kitchen completely when she is over or I will have a heart attack.

When I was younger, I had knick-knacks on shelves in my room. My nephews would come in and move things just a quarter of an inch or so, or they would turn things around just to bug me. And it did. Now, Big A does things like that and thinks its so funny. He shouldn’t be playing with the outlets at all, but he has switched some night lights on me in the bathrooms to see if I will notice. I do because they are different and one I use to plug in my curling iron and the plug won’t fit with the wrong nightlight in it! That sneaky kid! He didn’t really inherit the OCD, I don’t think. He is kind of messy and lazy. And sneaky.

The little one has it a bit as I have shown you from his pictures of lining up things. He also has been known to break the ends off French fries before he eats them. We still don’t know why.

  1. My mom has this. Everything has to be in the right place, or she goes nuts. And she has to have a “schedule”. I didn’t get the first part…I’m totally OK with a little bit of messy, but I DID get get the second part. I have to schedule everything! Love your header, BTW, and thanks for visiting my blog!

  2. Little A breaks off the ends of french fries because they are hard. The rest is soft. Liking a clean home and everything in its place is not necessarily OCD, now the 8 times with the door lock???

And your family, love you quirks and all!!!

  3. Timmy has interlocking foam pad things that cover the floor of his room so that the millions of toys that get dropped and thrown don’t make as much noise. The pads come in about 7 different colors. I am constantly rearranging the colors so that there are not too many of the same color near each other. Scott thinks I’m insane, mostly because some of them are under the bed where no one sees them…But I know two red ones are touching each other under there!!!

  4. Sorry! Family in town. Just got on now!
I have the checking on the locks thing myself. Every night, John closes down the house and then I sneak out of the bedroom to check and make sure all three outside entries are locked and secured AND will even turn the knob on the LOCKED front door to make sure I can’t open it!
    You’re linked!

  5. OMG – you have NO idea how much I relate to the Hershey’s Kisses thing! I would have SO dumped them all out and redistributed them so there would be an equal number of each kind of Kiss in each cup.

While I’m not as obsessive about my kitchen counters – 13 years of teenagers will kill that impulse faster than you could EVER imagine – don’t %&#$ with the knick-knacks in my curio. Don’t even touch the curio. You can look at it, but only obliquely and with the proper reverence.

    Oh, yeah.

  6. I am not burdened with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and for that I am truly grateful. Still, I think your kid’s issue with the french fries is just hilarious.

  7. I don’t know who Jan is but I really will read her blog if I can find it. Do you know how many times I wipe off those counters and do all kind of little things to help you heal your OCD but I am afaid you are just looking for another kind. Matching everything is another quirck but you don’t go for the boys clothes or hubbys I know you tried but he dresses himself. (haha). We all have quircks a big one is curly hair, hope you never get old when it falls out. (lol) love you anyway.

  8. My Mom and my MIL both are kitchen super cleaners. I like to keep a cup all day and when I’m at their house or vice versa. I think everybody has a little bit of OCD about something. Great Spin!
